C G I grew up in Wyoming C In and around Jacksonʼs hole G In the shadows of the Tetons Where summers are hot C And winters unbearably cold F But the Spring and the Fall C Are always as good as it gets G For over 70 years now C Iʼd watch the sun rise and set G Iʼve been a cowboy C Working the round-ups in spring G Iʼve lived in the mountains Hunted the grizzly C Trapping the rivers and streams F Always the loner C Iʼve treasured my freedom the most G And though i never married C As a young man i might have come close F From somewhere back east She came to the valley C With a man who did her no good F He was fast with the ladies A tin horn gambler C And a cheat whenever he could F She had no friends or family C Most of the time he was gone G He died in a card game C And she found herself all alone F Alone and afraid and left unprotected C ʼCause he was all that she had F Maybe i should have But i never told her C So she never knew he was bad F But iʼll always remember C Standing and watching her cry G There was no one to help her C But i was determined to try G I mended her fences and Fixed up her cabin C I had everything looking good G I laid by her food And wood for the winter C Helping wherever i could F The more i was around her C The more i wanted to be G There was something about her C That brought out a good side of me F I went into town,i brought a new outfit C I got me a haircut and shave F Iʼd trek through the snow For no good reason C Just to go by her cabin each day F I donʼt know about love C But i was quite taken in by it all G Till her brother came in the Spring C And he took her back to St. Paul G I donʼt go down to Jackson C Ainʼt nothing there but motels and bars G Too damn many tourists No place to hide C Theyʼll find you wherever you are F They like to call me old timer C I am getting older i guess G But i donʼt like the changes C ʼCause iʼve seen it all at its best G When my life is over C I donʼt want to be left in town G But up in the mountains There is a place C Iʼve marked off my own piece of ground F High in the Tetons C Above and away from it all G From the top of old Grand I bet on a clear day - you can see C All the way to St. Paul
